CUVIER's ANIMAL KINGDOM by Baron Cuvier, New Edition       CUVIER‘S "ANIMAL KINGDOM" by Baron Cuvier is an ex-library copy of the “New Edition” of Cuvier’s “Animal Kingdom, illustrated with 500 text engravings on wood and 36 full-page engravings on Steel. The Library stamp is on the first free endpaper and the first page of the Author‘s Preface to the First Edition. Thirty of the full-page engravings are taken from drawings by Thomas Landseer (1795-1880) who was the older brother of the more famous, Sir Edwin Landseer. Thomas studied under his father and actively helped him with his engraving business. Of the full-page plates, two are hand-colored (Giraffe; Parrots/Parrakeets), and the four of the different races of Mankind are tinted. This is quite a massive book covering the full range of animals. The book is in the original dark blue cloth bindings with gold decoration on the front cover and spine. The bindings are scuffed, frayed and soiled, but much of the decoration still shines through on the front cover. Because of the weight of the book, both boards are separating from the endpapers and are quite loose. There are a number of plates and gatherings in the text that are loosening or detached. The endpapers are generally foxed and browned, but the text and plates are generally clean and bright with only some light browning around the edges. There are 706 pages of text and index.
