The entire 5 Volume Set on Butterflies and Moths of the LLOYD’S NATURAL HISTORY SERIES. 5 X 7.5 inches, hardbound in marbled/rolled maroon cover; About 250-350 pages per volume; Spine with gilt titles and decoration and raised bands, with maroon portion light-faded to yellow. Set contains over 150 full-page, single-sided and outstanding chromolithographic plates produced from hand-colored engravings from the Jardine series of the Naturalist’s Library. Slight uniform toning throughout the copy, but no foxing and plates in excellent condition. READ FURTHER FOR INFORMATION ABOUT EACH VOLUME. *****This series of five volumes entitled “A Handbook to the Order Lepidoptera” was published as part of Lloyd’s Natural History by Edward Lloyd, Ltd. in London, 1896. The series was edited by R. Bowdler Sharpe who was a curator in the Zoological Department of the British Museum. Sharpe was an extremely knowledgeable Ornithologist and worked closely with John Gould on his projects finishing some after Gould’s death. This particular series was authored by the eminent,W.F. Kirby, from the Zoology Department of the British Museum and one of the World’s Authorities on Butterflies and Moths. He was the Author of “European Butterflies and Moths” which is a great reference work and numerous other books. The Lloyd’s books were issued first in paperback form as a weekly series and then bound into various volumes for purchase as well. The illustrations are magnificently coloured steel plates and are very well done. ****Volume I, Part I, Butterflies.
